Hi, I've got a question about Martha; I'm not trying to rock anyone's boat but am just trying to figure this out. I've been studying the George Coxes and their Marthas for a good while now and I have yet to figure out how anyone was able to associate Martha Stratton with the George Cox listed above. Is there an original or primary source that specifically links Martha S. to a specific George C.? The marriage date doesn't mention any parents and the wills for the various Marthas and Georges don't seem to mention any parents, only children. Is it just a guess? Thanks for any help on this.

Some secondary sources have been added that do seem to provide solid confirmation/leads to primary ones for the immediate family as described in the profile.

Hi Porter,

First, my apologies for being so late to answer, 2023 turned out to be one of the worst years of my life, mostly increasing medical issues resulting in a hospital stay for the summer, and then my mother passed away this fall after a lengthy illness. But I'm getting back into Wikitree with the New Year.

Actually, I have copies of all those sources as well as several others, and they are the source of my question. None of them lead to primary sources identifying Martha Stratton as the wife of a specific George Cox. Right now there are two different men named George Cox to whom Martha is attached on various genealogical websites around the internet. They are Cox-1606, listed above, and Cox-1610 (they may have been uncle and nephew). 1610 is supposed to be an ancestor of mine, hence my interest.

Unfortunately, each George was married to a woman named Martha, and therein lies the problem. Which one was Martha Stratton. Martha Stratton's ancestry seems to be outlined well, and the wills of each Martha detail the names of their children. Unfortunately, no primary documentation that I have been able to find for the two Marthas and two Georges has identified which George that Martha Stratton married and which Martha was the mother of which set of children. We only know that a marriage was performed for a George Cox to a Martha Stratton, Oct. 22nd. 1697. This is but one of the problems in dealing with the prolific Cox family, who unfortunately had a tendency to re-use the same names, like George, William, Henry, John, from one generation to the next. But thanks for posting your reply and adding those sources to this profile. Every little bit helps in the long run.

UNKNOWN-68994 and Stratton-187 appear to represent the same person because: Both are married to the same man. No details on Unknown profile.
