I believe it very questionable whether or not Charles Stratton and Mercy Lavinia Bump had a child. From what I have read this was a hoax made up by P. T. Barnum because the public wanted them to have children. If the birth record is correct wouldn't they have used a legal name of Charles Stratton instead of the stage name of Tom Thumb?

Late reply, but after watching a documentary about Charles Stratton and looking at the records I believe the preponderance of evidence supports the existence of a child. I do not believe the use of Charles' stage name invalidates the birth record as it can be shown that other family members were identified according to their relationship to "Tom Thumb", for instance the 1850 federal census wherein his father's occupation as listed as "Gen. Tom Thumb's father". Remembering that Charles Stratton's stage persona was, in a manner of speaking, a "Taylor Swift" of his day it is not surprising to see records making the connection between Charles' family members to his more commonly known name.

I do not believe the paper evidence either proves or disproves whether the child, Minnie, was the biological child of Charles and Mercy. She may have been a child that, through the mechanisms of PT Barnum, Charles and Mercy were caring for in the guise of being their daughter. Whatever the case may be, there was a child who died and at the time of her death was identified and interred as their daughter. The records exist. The grave exists. Only DNA testing could possibly make a definitive determination.
