Homer Russell was born in 1841 in Hancock, Maine, the son of Joseph and Eliza (Gordon) Stratton. He grew up in Hancock[1], but by 1860 had moved to Chelsea, Mass., with his famiy. He worked in the trade of brassfinisher, as did his father and brother Joseph Jr., who lived next door. [2]
He enlisted to serve in the Civil War at the age of 20 and mustered in to Company K of the Massachusetts 17th Infantry as a private on July 22, 1861. He was discharged for disability at New Berne, NC, on June 23, 1863.
Several months later, on November 23, 1863, he reenlisted, this time in his hometown of Hancock, Maine[3], mustering into Company B. of the 2nd Maine Cavalry a week later.[4] He also served as 2nd Lieutenant in Company C of the 86th US Colored Volunteer Infantry. [5]
After the war, he resided for a time in Boston, Mass., with his father[6], before returning to Maine.
He married Esther Hodges Macomber on July 22, 1867, in Winthop, Maine. [7] They seem to have spent some time in New York immediately after their marriage, where a daughter was born in to them in Brooklyn in 1868 (probably Emma). By 1870, he and his new wife resided in Augustua, Maine, in 1870 [8], with their two young children, at the home of Homer's mother-in-law. Homer had taken up the trade of plumber, which he would continue throughout his life.
They removed to Greenfield, Massachusetts by 1873[9], and finally settled in Watertown, Mass., before 1899, where Homer worked as a plumber with a partner as a business Stratton & Rooney.
Homer passed away in 1910[10] and was buried at the Ridgelawn Cemetery in Watertown, Mass.[11]
