Son of John Stratton and Charlotte Frink, George Stratton was born in 1823 at Oxford, Chenango County, New York where his father was a wheelwright and operated a sawmill. George grew to manhood on the family farm five miles south of Oxford, then worked with his father building and installing water-powered mill wheels and so learned the trade from his father.
