Biography

Lorenzo Stratton was born on August 3, 1816 in Concord, Niagara (later Erie County), New York to James Stratton and Elizabeth Wheeler. His family moved to Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York in 1819.

Lorenzo married Sophia Joanna Hill, the youngest daughter of Henry Hill, Jr. and Lucy Munson Russell on October 21, 1846 in Ohio. [1]

According to his biography in the Cattaraugus County, Historical Gazetteer, Lorenzo "was a merchant in Cincinnati, Ohio, a farmer on the homestead, domesticated a herd of elk, in 1868 bought an extensive plantation in Tennessee, removed thither, built a saw-mill and grist-mill and a fine residence, and died there in June,1884." [2]

In 1850, Lorenzo and Sophia, who was born in Salvador, Brazil, South America, were residents of Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, where Lorenzo was a book seller.[3]

By 1855 and through 1865, Lorenzo and Sophia lived in Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York with their children, including twins, Henry and Harriet.[4][5] [6]

Lorenzo's endeavor to domesticate elk in Little Valley drew great interest from the community. [7]

In 1869, Lorenzo and Sophia and their children moved from Little Valley, New York to Grassy Cove, Tennessee, an idyllic setting as described by the Stratton daughters in their pamphlet, "And This is Grassy Cove". [8] [9] [10]

Lorenzo died on June 30, 1884 in Grassy Cove, Cumberland, Tennessee, and was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee. (Note there are two Find a Grave records that should be merged.) [11] [12]
