Biography

Hannah Stretton the daughter of James Stretton (b1794) and Mary Leslie (b1794), was born in 1812 at Ashford, Kent, England. Hannah married William Mathieson (1799 - 1849), in 1834. Hannah and William had 7 children:

Hannah's occupations during her lifetime were soldiers wife and washerwoman.

Hannah Stretton died on Friday, 27th July 1883, at 3 Canongate, Edinburgh, Scotland. The cause of death given as apparent disease of the stomach.

1812 - Hannah's Birth: Ashford, Kent, England [1]
Hannah Stretton was born in 1812, the only daughter of James Stretton and Mary Leslie.
  • A civil birth record for Hannah cannot be traced, however an army birth record for a Hannah Stretton exists. Born to a soldier in the 73rd Regiment of Foot in 1812. This ties in with Hannah's death record where her fathers occupation, as well as her husbands are given as army pensioners. Her husband also served with the 73rd Foot. The soldier was most likely James Stretton also of the 73rd Foot. At the time of his discharge from the Army, William Mathieson, her future husband was the pay sergeant.

1834 - Marriage: (Aged 22)
Hannah married William Mathieson, son of unknown parents.
  • There is no trace of a marriage record for William and Hannah, however as most of their children were baptised it is likely that they went through some form of marriage rite with the the British Army shortly before the birth of their first child in 1835.

1835 - Birth of Daughter: Colewort Barracks, Portsmouth, Southamptonshire, England (Aged 23) [2]
Hannah and husband William's 1st child and and 1st daughter Catherine Jane Mathieson was born in 1835. Catherine was subsequently baptized on Wednesday, 5th August 1835 in Portsmouth Parish Church. When Catherine was baptized her family were living at Colewort Barracks, Portsmouth, her father's occupation was sergeant, 73rd Regiment.

1838 - Birth of Son: Ireland (Aged 26) [3]
Hannah and husband William's 2nd child and and 1st son John Mathieson was born in 1838.
  • John's date and place of birth are taken from his 1851 census record.

1841 - Census: Sunday, 6th June at Citadel Barracks, Drypool, Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, England (Aged 29) [4]
When the 1841 Census was taken Hannah, a soldiers wife, was living with husband and:
• daughter Catherine Mathieson, aged 5, a soldiers child
• son John Mathieson, aged 3, a soldiers child
  • William Mathieson served with the 73rd Foot and according to his service record was serving in Canada at the 1841 census leaving his wife and children in the barracks.

1842 - Birth of Son: Portsea Island, Hampshire, England (Aged 30) [5]
Hannah and husband William's 3rd child and and 2nd son Richard Mathieson was born in 1842.

1844 - Birth of Daughter: Aberdeen, Scotland (Aged 32) [3]
Hannah and husband William's 4th child and and 2nd daughter Hannah Mathieson was born in 1844.
  • Hannah's date and place of birth are taken from her 1851 census record.

1844 - Birth of Daughter: Boghead Farm, Fetteresso, Kincardineshire, Scotland (Aged 32) [6]
Hannah and husband William's 5th child and 3rd daughter Agnes Mathieson was born on Friday, 1st November 1844. Agnes was subsequently baptized on Friday, 22nd November 1844 at the age of 3 weeks.
  • William Mathieson of Boghead Farm had a daughter by his wife Hannah Mathieson born 1st November 1844 and baptised by the Rev Wm Thomson on the 22nd of the same month named Agnes. Witnesses Peter Grant and Isobel Holyson

1845 - Birth of Daughter: Bogheadly, Fetteresso, Kincardineshire, Scotland (Aged 33) [7]
Hannah and husband William's 6th child and 4th daughter Caroline Mathieson was born on Thursday, 20th November 1845. Caroline was subsequently baptized about 1845 at the age of 11 months.
  • William Mathieson, labourer at Bogheadly and his wife Hannah Mathieson had a daughter born 20th Nov 1845 and named Caroline.
  • The OS name book for Kincardineshire 1863 describes Bogheadly as a good farm steading on the Estate of Rickarton on the South side of the Slug Road about 5 miles from Stonehaven. [OS1/19/10/159].

1849 - Death of Husband: Cork, Ireland (Aged 37) [8]
Hannah's husband William Mathieson died on Sunday, 29th July 1849, at the age of 50, his cause of death is unknown.
  • William's death date is taken from the Royal Hospital Chelsea Cork District pension record specifying the cessation of his pension on death.

1850 - Birth of Daughter: Cork, Ireland (Aged 38) [3]
Hannah and husband William's 7th child and and 5th daughter Rebecca Mathieson was born in 1850.
  • Rebecca must have been conceived in 1849 as her father William Mathieson died at Cork in July 1849. Rebecca's date and place of birth taken from her Census records. As yet have been unable to source an Irish baptism record for her.

1851 - Census: Sunday, 30th March at Cameron Street, Stonehaven, Kincardineshire, Scotland (Aged 39) [3]
When the 1851 Census was taken widow Hannah, a pauper, was head of her family household which comprised of herself and:
• daughter Catherine Mathieson, aged 15, a servant
• son John Mathieson, aged 13, at school
• son Richard Mathieson, aged 8, at school
• daughter Hannah Mathieson, aged 7, at school
• daughter Agnes Mathieson, aged 6, at school
• daughter Caroline Mathieson, aged 5, at school
• daughter Rebecca Mathieson, aged 1

1861 - Census: Sunday, 7th April at Donaldsons Close, Stonehaven, Kincardineshire, Scotland (Aged 49) [9]
When the 1861 Census was taken widow Hannah, a pensioners widow, was head of household and was living with daughter Rebecca Mathieson, at school. The household accomodation consisted of 2 room(s) with windows.

1862 - Media Report: Friday, 12th September at Stonehaven, Kincardineshire, Scotland (Aged 50) [10]
Dundee Perth and Coupar Advertiser of 12th Sep 1862 reports that Hannah was convicted of stealing turnips and sentenced to 2 days imprisonment.

1862 - Statutory Registration: Saturday, 22nd November at Monro Place, Stonehaven, Kincardineshire, Scotland (Aged 50) [11]
Hannah registers the birth of illigitimate grandson John Mathieson (mother daughter Hannah) with the Fetteresso registrar.

1871 - Census: Sunday, 2nd April at 144a Pleasance, Edinburgh, Scotland (Aged 59) [12]
When the 1871 Census was taken widow Hannah was living in the household of son-in-law Peter Bryson. In addition to Hannah the household comprised:
• son-in-law Peter Bryson, aged 21, a mason
• daughter Rebecca Bryson, aged 21
• grandson Richard Bryson, aged 6 months
The household accomodation consisted of 1 room(s) with windows.

1876 - Death of Daughter: Millerhill, Newton, Midlothian, Scotland (Aged 64) [13]
Hannah's daughter Caroline Mathieson died on Wednesday, 29th March 1876 at Millerhill, Newton at the age of 30 from septicaemia. When Caroline, unmarried, died her occupation was housekeeper. Caroline's death was reported by occupier George Blacklaw , who was present at time of death, on 29th March 1876 at Newton.
  • Caroline's mothers maiden name once again is mis-spelt.

1881 - Census: Sunday, 3rd April at Royal Infirmary, Lauriston Place, Edinburgh, Scotland (Aged 69) [14]
When the 1881 Census was taken widow Hannah, a washerwoman, is a patient in The Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh.

1883 - Hannah's Death: 3 Canongate, Edinburgh, Scotland [15]
Hannah Stretton died on Friday, 27th July 1883 at 3 Canongate, Edinburgh at the age of 64 from disease of the stomach. When Hannah, widow of William Mathieson army pensioner, died her occupation was charwoman. Hannah's death was reported by son-in-law Peter Bryson , who was present at time of death, on 28 Jul 1883 at Edinburgh.
  • Although present at death, Peter gives his residence as 29 Croft Anrigh
