Biography

Jacob Strickland was born between 1697 and 1714 [conflicting info]. Some data say he was born in 1705. His FindAGrave Memorial show his birth shown as 1714. He passed away about 1790 in Nash County, North Carolina.[1] Jacob's will, signed 18 Aug 1788.[2] was recorded in Nash County, North Carolina in the May Term of 1790. Eight of the children listed below were mentioned in the will, along with several grandchildren. Mary and Isaac are not. Please read the will and check my impression.

He married, possibly 1726, probably in Isle of Wight, Virginia, Elizabeth Taylor Born 1704 in Ireland. She died 1739 either in Virginia or in Nash, North Carolina. She arrived in Virginia in 1719. It has been reported that they married in Guilford, North Carolina, but this area was first settled in the 1740s and is an unlikely venue for their marriage, given her early decease. According to Forrest King in Descendants of Mathew Strickland,[3] Jacob's first three children as reported by King, and possibly his fourth, were born in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Curiously, all of the children mentioned in this article were born in 1739 or later. King also marks Jacob's first appearance in the records as occurring on 20 Aug 1738 in Isle of Wight County. His first appearance in the records in Edgecombe County is 20 Apr 1745. So it is likely that he married Elizabeth in about 1726 and had at least his first six children before losing her.

He probably married Lucretia about 1740, and moved to North Carolina about 1742.

King's account does not reflect marriage to either Elizabeth Taylor or Lucretia Pitt, but there are at least five records found on ancestry.com that reflect Jacob's marriage to Lucretia.

He married in Nash County, NC, La Mar Lucretia Pitts (1706-16 in Albemarle, North Carolina, Died 1789 in Nash, North Carolina) [4]

In searching for documentation of his marriages, I found the following: All of the following records are from U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900, a massive compilation of user-generated data:

  • Lamer married Jacob Strickland in Nash County, North Carolina in 1734.[5]
  • Lucretia married Jacob Strickland who was born in Virginia.[6]
  • Lucretia married Jacob Strickland in 1741.[7]
  • Lucretia married Jacob Strickland, who was born in PR [unknown to me] in 1697.[8]
  • Lucretia married Jacob Strickland who was born in Is [unknown to me] in 1674.[9]
    • A description of what this source is, sources for its information, and a list of typical location abbreviations can be found here. Note that "PR" and "Is" questioned above are not on the list. Also note that the abbreviations are truncations of user-provided information, and are often just the first two letters of the locations, Therefore, PR could mean Prince William County or Puerto Rico or something else entirely. On the bright side, "Is" could mean Isle of Wight.

Records show he had the following ten children :

  1. Mary Strickland ...... 1726-1824 child of Elizabeth Taylor
  2. Elisha Strickland ...... 1727-1791 child of Elizabeth Taylor
  3. Matthew Strickland 1731-1828 child of Elizabeth Taylor
  4. Hardy Strickland ......1732-unknown child of Elizabeth Taylor (possibly used the name Harlan in both Edgecombe and Nash records.
  5. Solomon Strickland 1735–1818 child of Elizabeth Taylor
  6. John Mark Strickland 1736-1811 child of Elizabeth Taylor
  7. Jacob Strickland, Jr. 1741–1804 child of La Mar Lucretia Pitts
  8. Henry Strickland ..... 1744–1796 child of La Mar Lucretia Pitts
  9. Issac Strickland ...... 1744-1790 child of La Mar Lucretia Pitts
  10. Lucretia Strickland ..... 1755- aft May 1816 (per Forrest King)[3]

i don't think the marriage date to Lucretia can be correct. She would have been passed the child bearing years and all the children listed were born much before 1762. I've seen a number of different dates for this marriage from 1734-1741.

Thank you - I would tend to agree. I don't remember where I found these dates. It's been a challenge figuring out the Strickland line. So many Solomon's, Ezekial's, Elisha's, etc. Thankful I have my grandfathers papers that identified family, wives and children.
