Biography

According to Dwight:[1]

Dea. Phinehas Strong (son of Justice Joseph Strong of Coventry, Ct., and Sarah Allen) b. about 1704, m. Mary Parker (dau. of Dea. Thomas Parker of Coventry). She d. April 13, 1767. He was a farmer at Coventry : a member for fifty-three sessions, including extra ones of the General assembly, having been thirty-eight times elected to the legislature : a selectman for six years, justice of the peace for many years, and for a long period a deacon of the church.

He married Mary Parker (daughter of Capt. Samuel and Mary Parker)[2] in Coventry, Connecticut, on November 5, 1724.[3]

They had 11 children:[4]

  • Phinehas, Jr., b. Nov. 9, 1725.
  • Mary, b. March 11, 1727.
  • Sarah, b. April 2, 1729.
  • Azubah, b. Oct. 11, 1731.
  • Oziah, b. Sept. 30, 1734.[5]
  • Jerusha, b. Feb. 21, 1737/8.
  • Iranah, b. Jan. 27, 1741/2.
  • Elijah and Elisha (twins), b. Aug. 15, 1743.
  • Beulah, b. March 7, 1746, d. Aug. 22, 1750.
  • Hannah, b. March 16, 1748, d. April 24, 1767.

A Phineas Strong is buried in the South Street Cemetery in Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut.[6] The inscription describes him as "consort of Joanna Strong, died Mar. 1, 1788 age 82".[2] Presumably, Joanna was either the name of his second wife, or a different Phinehas Strong was buried there.

The will of Phinehas is available from Ancestry: Probate Records, 1719-1918; Author: Connecticut. Probate Court (Windham District); Probate Place: Windham, Connecticut

In addition to his children, he names his wife, Joanna. So, the burial is this Phinehas and he had a second wife, Joanna.

There is ambiguity about Phinehas's birth. On page 310 Dwight says he was born in 1714 and on page 309 says that all the children except Phinehas were born in Northampton. On page 432 Dwight ways that Phinehas was born in about 1704. He married in 1724, so 1704 is reasonable whereas 1714 is not. His tombstone suggests that he was born in 1706. There is documentary evidence that 7 other children (Phinehas's siblings) were born in Northampton between 1701 and 1713.

Source 1 (The History of the Descendants of Elder John Strong of Northampton, Mass.) says the father was of CT, not that Phineas was b there. Also p 310 of the source gives Phineas b as 1714, then in hand someone wrote 1704.
