Biography

Noah Judson Strong was born in 1830, the 8th child of Noah Strong and Grace Foote. He and his wife left Connecticut shortly after their marriage in 1858, residing in Chicago, Illinois until 1864 when they moved to Camden, New York.

According to a history of Camden[1], Judson N. Strong "came from Chicago to Camden in 1864, having been in the employ of the Illinois Central Railroad. He entered into partnership in this village with Charles and Edwin Spencer in the dry goods and grocery business. Later he was engaged in the produce business. He died at the home of his son Arthur, in Windsor, Conn., October 24, 1894, and was buried at Manchester, Conn."

Another source adds that he lived in Camden, NY where he was a "commission merchant and deputy postmaster since 1882."[2] Sometime after 1886, Judson moved from Camden back to Windsor, Connecticut, a small town very near his birthplace, to live with his younger son, Arthur.

Research Notes

The sources included here report three different names for the person in this profile. In the Strong family history (1871), Emory Foote Strong (7th child of Noah and Grace above) provided the details on his siblings, including the name "Noah Judson Strong" for his younger brother # 8. Later sources use Judson Noah Strong (with same spouse, children or other identifying information). His gravestone indicates "Judson N. Strong". Lastly, Abram Foote's 1907 book reports the name of this son of Noah and Grace "Emery Judson Strong", which is clearly a mistake.

Proposed resolution: Use the birth name in the profile, but list "Judson" as the preferred name later in life.
