Henry John Strong was born in 1854 at Westbury on Tyrm, Gloucestershire, the son of John Strong and Mary Ann Strong formerly Portch. [1]
In the 1861 census Henry was living with his family at Winterbourne, Gloucestershire. Father John, aged 46, was a gardener. Mother Mary Ann, aged 46, was a laundress. Sister Elizabeth Susan was aged 8. Henry John was aged 6. [2]
Mother Mary Ann Strong died in 1862 aged 46 years. [3]
Father John remarried to Susan Portch on 3 October 1863 at St. James Church, Bristol, Gloucestershire. [4]
In 1871 the family was living in the village of Stoke Bishop near Westbury on Tyrm, Gloucestershire. Father John, aged 56, was still a gardener. Susan was aged 51. Henry, aged 16, was also a gardener. And boarder Louise Bird was aged 5. [5]
Henry John Strong married Emma Tuckley in 1878 at Aston, Warwickshire. [6] Of interest Emma was the widow of John Tuckley. Her maiden name was Jukes. She had three children to her marriage to John named Emma Tuckley born 1865, Louisa Tuckley born 1867 and Walter William Tuckley born 1870.
Henry and Emma had two known children named Elizabeth Ann Strong born 1880 and Ada Minnie Strong born 1882.
In the 1881 census Henry and Emma were residing at 10 The Avenue, Cooksley Rd, Aston. Henry, aged 27, was a gardener. Emma, aged 40, was a dressmaker. Emma's children Emma, Louie, as named, and Walter were aged 16, 13 and 11 years. Their surname was incorrectly recorded as Suckling. Elizabeth Strong was aged 9 months. [7]
In the 1891 census the family was living at 151 Sycamore Rd, Smethwick, Staffordshire. Henry, aged 38, was a gardener. Emma was aged 49. Children Elizabeth and Ada Strong were aged 10 and 8 years respectively. [8]
Emma Strong died in 1897 aged 55 years. [9]
Henry John Strong then remarried to Emma Jane Carter on 8 July 1900 at St. Paul’s Church, Blackheath, Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. Their marriage certificate recorded Henry was a widower aged 44 and a florist. His father was named as John Strong (deceased). Emma was a spinster aged 24. Her father was named as John Carter, a brick layer. Both were living at Park St at the time of the marriage. Their witnesses were John Carter, Emma’s father, and Emmeline Elizabeth Carter, Emma’s sister. [10]
This couple had four children named Henry Ernest born 5 February 1901, Cecil Edgar born 29 January 1903, Norman Frederick born 1904 and Maurice Austin born 1906.
In the 1901 census Henry and family was residing at 151 Sycamore Rd, Smethwick. Henry, aged 46, was then working as a jobbing gardener. Emma was aged 25. Elizabeth, aged 20, was working as a jeweller's clerk. Ada, aged 18, was a dressmaker. Henry was aged just 2 months. [11]
The family were still at the same address in the 1911 census. John, aged 58, was working for himself as a landscape gardener. Emma, aged 35, was a smocker working at home. Henry was aged 10, Edgar [sic] aged 8, Norman aged 6 and Morris [sic] aged 4. [12]
Henry John Strong died in 1915 aged 62 years. [13]
