Research Notes

Marriage Records No evidence that Robert may have married, as his 2nd, to a Mary E. Genon. No record of any Genon marriage is reported in "Early Marriages of Cabell County, Virginia and West Virginia, 1809-1866."[7]

Birth Records for Manford E. Strother reports Mary E. Livingston as his mother[2]; and for Jenoah Ann Strother reports Mary Livingston as her mother.[3] The birth record for an unnamed daughter reports R. D. Strother and Mary Livingston as parents.[4]

Daughter Lou Strother's death certificate says her mother was Elizabeth Livingston and father's name Robert Strother.[8]

The death certificate of daughter, Dona, lists Mary C. Livingston as Donna's mother.

In FamilySearch, daughter, Lou F. Strother's marriage on 11 Nov 1886 at Wayne County, West Virginia reports Lou's mother as "Nancy E Strother."[9] However, the original marriage certificate clearly states the bride's parents as R. D. and Mary E. Strother. The marriage took place at the residence of Bob Strother.[10] Note: the West Virginia Culture website transcribed the bride's name as Lou F. Strothen.

Census:

The 1860 Census for District 1, Morgan County, Kentucky reports Robert D. Strother, born c. 1832 in Virginia, a shoemaker with his wife, Mary E. Strother, born c. 1835 in Kentucky, son Alfred R. Strother, born c. 1855, daughter Genoah A. Strother, born c. 1856 and a servant, Martha Mckeizer, born c. 1842.[11]

The 1880 Census of Wayne County, West Virginia, lists the following family members: Strother, R. D. WM 47 Farmer WV WV WV Mary E. WF 45 Wife Keeps House VA VA TN Genora WF 24 Dau Keeps House KY WV VA Dona WF 15 Dau At home VA WV VA L. F. WF 12 Dau At home WV WV VA Bob WM 6 Son WV WV VA Maudie WF 5 Dau WV WV VA[12]

The 1900 Census of Berkeley Springs, Morgan County, West Virginia shows a Mary E. Strother, 67 years old, born November 1832. She was widowed and living alone. She was the mother of two children, one living. Mary was born in West Virginia. Her father was born in West Virginia, and her mother in Pennsylvania. Mary could read and write, and lived in her own house, without a mortgage.[13] This appears to be a different Mary E. Strother than the one reported in the 1880 Wayne County Census, as the birth places of her parents do not match the 1900 Census.

Most of the 1890 census was destroyed by fire in Washington DC. I found a Robert Strother and his brother who died on the same day 13 June 1881 in Harrison County West Virginia. This Robert had a wife named Mary Strother and how did the brothers die on the same day. All the early Strothers and Livingston's were from Harrison and Jefferson counties West Virginia. There were no Genon in the whole state.

Residence:

Robert D. Strother appears to have been born in 1833 in Virginia (later West Virginia). By 1854, he removed to Kentucky (first Johnson County and then Morgan County), and by 1880 removed to Wayne County, West Virginia.

Philip and his son, Joseph Strother, preachers of Big Sandy Valley, WV.[14]

1890 Census, do not think this is the identical Robert living at Lee district, Mingo, West Virginia, birth Feb 1834, widowed, shoemaker, born in KY.[15]
