EDWARD STUART - SON OF SAMUEL STUART, THE IMMIGRANT Edward Stuart was the 5th child and 4th son born to Samuel and Jane (Dickey) Stuart. From THE STEWART CLAN MAGAZINE: "Edward Stuart, son of Samuel and Jane (Dickey) Stuart, was born in July 1767 in Orange County, NC and married Mary McPherson on 13 Feb 1787 as shown by Bible records gathered by the Alexander Martin Chapter of the DAR, of High Point, NC and deposited in the Department of Archives and History at Raleigh, NC. Mary was the daughter of William McPherson of Orange County, NC as shown by his will, probated in Feb 1818 in which he spoke of Mary and Edward as my children". Edward Stuart and James Woolason were witnesses to a deed 11 Sep 1787 by Samuel Stuart, conveying land on Pine Hill Creek, a branch of Cane Creek, in Chatham County, NC. On 10 Jul 1788, Edward Stuart was granted 40 acres of land on Indian Creek, waters of Cane Creek, beginning at William McPherson's corner on Thaxton's line in Chatham County NC. The census of 1790 for Chatham County, NC listed Edward Stewart as having a wife and two young sons. He apparently moved to Moore County, NC after that for on 11 Feb 1801, Edward Stuart, Edward Ramseur and John Dabney were witnesses to a deed by Samuel Stuart of Moore County NC selling land on Little Brush Creek in Chatham County, NC near the Randolph County, NC line." THE BROTHERS AND SISTERS OF EDWARD STUART In 1859 Edward Stuart's son, Edward "Ned" Stuart, wrote his family history and here is what he had to say about the children of Samuel Stuart. "The oldest son, GEORGE, was slain in the Revolution at what is called Pile's Hacking Match in Orange County. He died unmarried and left no children. The next, ADAM, settled in Darlington District, South Carolina. The third, JAMES, settled in Georgia. EDWARD, my father, the fourth son, man of this history hereafter, and SAM, the youngest, lived until his oldest children were grown, on Rocky River in Chatham County, NC, then moved to Georgia. They also brought up two daughters. BETTIE married a man by the name of... (here the history is torn). The other daughter was not named in the history. Edward "Ned" Stuart continued to write: “My father, Edward Stuart, was born in the northwestern part of Chatham County, NC in the year 1767 mother was within a few days of the same age. They were married young and not being well matched, did not live happily together. They first settled near the northwestern boundary of Chatham and then moved from there to Little Brush Creek in the southwest corner of the same county where I was born but before my recollection. They then moved to Moore County and settled on the dividing ridge or about the middle grounds between McLendon's and Crawley Creeks. Here my earliest recollections are centered..... Here we lived – father, mother, brothers and sister, for some six or eight years. My father was a very ingenious man: a wagon-wright, a natural mechanic, carrying on a variety of trades as well as a farmer." Ned Stuart continued: "My fathers's family consisted of six sons and one daughter: George, Sam D., Edward (the writer), William, John and Enoch. My sister's name was Nancy. George, the oldest, was married before father and mother separated. He married Clarissa Dickerson. Samuel Dickey and sister were nearly grown. The other four, myself and three younger brothers were small - the youngest quite so. When it became known that my father was gone, what property he owned was sold to satisfy his creditors, and not enough of that. Consequently, we were left quite destitute that spring." The mother and children stayed together until the fall, when they had to separate the family. Mary (McPherson) Stuart returned to live with her kin in Orange County, NC after the separation and she carried the two youngest children, John and Enoch with her. Nancy went to SC to live with her Aunt Elizabeth (Stuart) Harland and Samuel Dickey went to Georgia with his Uncle Sam Stuart. A neighbor took William and Ned to live with his married brother, George. After about a year Mary returned to Moore County and set up housekeeping and tried to keep the family together. She had Ned, John and Enoch with her at this time. In May 1813, Edward, the father, came and took Ned to live with William Tyson so that he could attend Euphronia Academy in Moore County, NC. Edward Stuart is mentioned for the last time in the history, circa 1816, when he gave his son, Ned, five dollars. In the 1830 Census of Moore County, NC. Edward's son, William Stuart, is listed with 2 males 20-30 and 1 male 60-70, no females are listed. Could the 60-70 old male be Edward? When and where Edward died is not known at this time. Mary (McPherson) Stuart, at age 71, went with her youngest son, Enoch, and his family to Fayette County, Tenn. in 1838. Enoch married Anne McNeill in Moore County, NC in 1834. Mary (McPherson) Stuart died in Fayette County, Tenn. on 12 May 1842 at the age of 75.
