Biography

This profile is part of the Stewart Name Study.

Amelia was a daughter of Samuel B. Stuart and his wife Catharine. Find-A-Grave reports her birthdate as 2 June 1840 and her death date as 10 September 1901.

In the 1850 Census, she was recorded in Caernarvon Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, in the household of James Steward (this first name appears to be an error), and his wife Catharine Steward, 35. Children in the household were Sarah, 15; John, 14; Samuel, 13; William, 12; Amelia, 11; Elmira, 10; and Nancy, 1. [1]

Her father, Samuel B. Stuart, died 11 September 1852.[2]

The 1860 census recorded Amelia as 19 years old, living in the household of widow Catharine Stewart in Caernarvon Township. The census record lists three daughters in the household: Amelia (19), Elmira (17), and Victoria A. Stewart (10).[3]

Amelia Stewart married Henry Himes. The family resided in Caernarvon Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. The 1880 census recorded Henry Himes as a carpenter, age 47, in a household that also included Amelia Himes, age 41; daughters Mary E. Himes, 16, Elizabeth C. Himes, 14, Florance M. Himes, 10, Sarah J. Himes, 6, and Phoebe Ann Himes, 3; and son David H. Himes, 8. Another daughter, Margrett F. Himes, age 11 or 12, was listed in her family's record with the notation "Lives out" and was also recorded as a servant living in the nearby household of farmer Peter Swartzintruber and his wife Katy.[4]

The 1900 U.S. Census recorded 62-year-old widow Amelia Himes in the home of Joseph and Annie Wunderlich, both age 23, in Warwick Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, and their son Leroy, who was born in March 1900. Amelia was described as Joseph's mother-in-law (i.e., Annie's mother). She was born in June 1838 and had had nine children, of whom eight were still living.[5]
