DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Rebecca by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Rebecca:

I have changed the 'confirmed with DNA' status for both parents to 'confident' because there is no DNA confirmation statement on the profile. Please do not change it back again to 'confirmed with DNA' until there is a proper statement on the profile.

Hopefully someone can help me out with this, as I'm an amateur at this and still learning. I've seen other sources (such as https://www.geni.com/people/John-McClung-Sr/4024120153400028775?through=4024124407240028976) claim that Rebecca Stuart (McClung) is not the mother of John McClung's children -- Janet Thompson was married to John before Rebecca was.

Does anyone know which is true, or at least which one is more likely true? At one point I found a source claiming there was DNA evidence that Rebecca Stuart was the mother, but I can't find it now.

Hi Tabitha, here is a link to my website on John McClung and Rebecca Stuart. https://johnmcclungandrebeccastuart.webstarts.com/index.html

There is more than enough documentation available to prove that John and Rebecca were married in 1726, before the birth of any of the McClung children. The only mention of Janet Thompson was in the will of Robert Means, which states that one of the people in charge of his estate after his death was to be John McClung, whose 'wife a keeping' was a woman named Janet Thompson. It is well known that there were several men named John McClung living in Virginia at that time, and there is no prove that the man they were talking about was the John McClung who married Rebecca Stuart. I have had my DNA tested and I am linked through it to the Stuart family, which could only have come from having Rebecca as an ancestor. Hope this helps.

Hopefully an easy question... what is the proof of the parentage for Rebecca and Archibald Stuart?

:Hi Joe, there is a christening document for Rebecca Stuart listing Andrew as her father. There are numerous court documents listing Archibald having a sister named Rebecca, and there is mention of Rebecca's relationship to the family on page of the McClung Genealogy written by Rev. William McClung in 1904, which gives the proven relationship between Rebbeca Stuart and Hon. Alexander Hugh Holmes Stuart, who was the Secretary of State in President Franklin Pierce's Cabinet. I also have several DNA matches on Ancestry.com that go back to the Stuart family.

Nancy

Thank you for the reply Nancy.

The reason I asked is a line was claimed from Rebecca Stuart to king Edward III on the Gateway Descendants from Edward III page. As you can see from this G2G post, many dozens have claimed such a descent however all but one has proven false. With your Stuarts I can easily accept and prove the line from her father all the way to EIII.

I noted on the FAG profile that it says “Archibald Stuart is BELIEVED to be the first born son of Andrew Stewart,” so at least someone was expressing some doubt as to the accuracy of the claim. This along with the fact that I could not easily find direct evidence led me to ask you the question.

I have no problem believing that Andrew Stuart, 7th Baron of Castle Stuart had a daughter Rebecca (though I would want better proof and references that could be checked). I also have no problem believing that Rebecca was a sister of Archibald Stuart. I still don’t understand the evidence that they are the same person.

The mention of relationship to Hon. Alexander Hugh Holmes Stuart helps show her relationship to Archibald Stuart, but not to any father they might have had. The DNA is evidence is doubtful as it is too far back to be useful, and at most can only help say that she was a Stuart and not that she was the daughter of any particular Stuart.

Are we sure that the baptism record of Rebecca Stuart was 1. The daughter of Andrew Stuart, 7th Baron of Castle Stuart and 2. That it was the record of the Rebecca Stuart later found in Pennsylvania?

Do we know that Andrew Stuart even had a son Archibald? He is not given in the Peerage of Ireland which names other sons. Is there any primary evidence that Archibald was a son of Andrew Stuart?

There are Castle Stewart family records lodged at PRONI, the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland.

Included is a family tree of Andrew 7th Baron and Eleanor Dallway. In the Will of Andrew 7th Baron dated 1715 ten children are named. There is no mention of an Archibald, Rebecca, John and David as being their children, intriguing because they were all supposedly still in Ireland in 1715. Their son Robert b1700 inherited the Title 8th Baron as the eldest son and Heir. I would love to see the Christening document which states Rebecca is a daughter of Andrew 7th Baron.

Nancy Richmond , LOOK at the two Rebecca Stuarts side by side,

and READ what others proposing merges are saying SAME PERSON & SAME HUSBAND they ARE the same person LOOK at the two John McClungs side by side its going to merge into your version anyway , because yours was done first. when its merged , you can then change any mistakes. including making the second C in McClung a cap.

Stuart-1983 and Stuart-1001 appear to represent the same person because: Same marriage date and place, same birth and death dates and places. The information on Stuart-1983 must have been confused with the information of a different Rebecca Stuart, but I have found no sourced information on Rebecca (Stuart) McClung, mother of Sarah (McClung) Lyle born in Ireland in 1733. This Rebecca Stuart McClung was not Sarah's mother s she was married in Pennsylvania in 1726.

Stuart-1001 and Stuart-1983 do not represent the same person because: Authenticated Bible Records from the Bible of Rebecca Stuart's grandson Alexander list her date of death as June 13, 1781. This is confirmed by court records from Rockbridge County, Virginia. Rebecca Stuart was born in Galloway, Scotland in 1710, according to her christening records from Londonberry, Ireland (W.H.Egle's N&Q). From 'Early Stuart Family Immigrants in America' written by Andrew Stuart in 1947.

Nancy , It's your Stuart-3066 profile that has the wrong date , it says 1706. It is 1710 like in our Stuart-1001. I had a downloaded copy but lost it when lost access to that work computer . Would love a copy . I'm going to re-start the merge . If any q's please let me know. Robert.

Stuart-3066 and Stuart-1001 are not ready to be merged because: I have source documentation that proves Rebecca Stuart was born in 1710, and married John McClung in Pennsylvania in 1726. (a marriage bond and a genealogy book "Early Stuart Immigrants in America" written by Andrew Stuart in 1947. I would be happy to provide you with copies of these. If you would like to change Rebecca's date of birth to 1710 in your records, I would be happy to approve the merge. Nancy Richmond
