Son of Scottish parents David Arthur Stuart and Jessie Thomson, William Thomson Stuart was born in Dumbartonshire, in Scotland in around 1852.
He is noted on the 1851 (at one month old) and 1861 Scottish Census, when at that time his family were living at Red Craig Cottage, and his father was the proprietor of Arthurston Dyewood Mills. They had a household that included some domestic help.
Some time after this, the family relocated to Tahiti, where his father continued his other occupation as merchant seaman, eventually becoming the captain of his own ship.
