He was baptized on 08 Jan 1634/5 at Holy Cross, Pattishall=Pateshull, Northamptonshire, England [1] and his parents were Ann (Clarke, 1601-1638) and George Steward (1591-1641).
Surname spelling variations have included Steward, Stewart, Stuart.
He owned property at Ashen Swamp in Henrico County, Virginia. [2]
John Steward first married about 1663 at St.Johns Church in Henrico County, Virginia to Dorothy Waters (1645-1714).
John Steward married secondly on 02 Oct 1686 in Henrico County, Virginia to Susannah Burton [3] (c1640-aft.1699).
In 1694 he was headright of Thomas Taylor for 7 persons including Francis Taylor, Dorothy Taylor, Jno. Young, Jno. Bell, Jno. Steward, Symon Balms=Balono and Will. Stanaway.
He passed away on 30 June 1706 in Bristol Parish, Henrico County, Virginia. [citation needed]
Profile protected to preserve Steward spelling. When researching a newly adopted profile (Stuart-377), it appeared the correct spelling would be Steward (born in England, not Virginia, and earlier than the birth year given in the profile when adopted). The profile had death in 1703 in Henrico. Bristol Parish, Virginia, served Henrico County. A contemporary record exists showing a John Steward Jr. in Henrico County in 1697 (whether this John or a son is not clear, but probably a son).
There is a date conflict for the 2 marriages of this John Steward, Sr. ...
If this Will info is correct, then it seems that currently on 2023/06/01 ...
Mary Anne (Stuart) Gaulding was removed as a child ...
Interesting note there is a "Gaulding" named "Walthall". Wm. Walthall owned land adjacent to John Stewarts' acreage. Gayle Blankenship's research - she is a Gaulding researcher [5] and it is possible conjecture that she connected Walthall Gaulding to Wm. Walthall who owned lands adjacent to this family.
Gayle mentioned a "chart" sent to her showing the Pateshall lineage for John Stewart, Sr., though does not indicate if she had vetted the information; "Parents: A chart sent recently ... gave the birth date for John Stewart as 08 Jan 1634 in Pateshall ..."
Susannah Hatcher [6] was NOT the wife of this profile for John Steward.
There is a discrepancy in the order or her marriages ...
From available information, it seems more likely that John Steward, Sr. was Susannah's first husband. And that the John who was racing horses in 1697 was their son John Steward, Jr., [8] and the profiles attached as daughters to duplicates are theirs also ... Elizabeth (b: 1665) & Mary (b: 1680).
The above notes seem to be confused. The Susannah who married John Stewart (whatever spelling) did so on a license granted 2 Oct 1686. Per the research of the Hatcher Family Assn., she had been married twice before. First, to William Hatcher, Jr. about 1660. Second to Thomas Burton, Sr. about 1670. Burton researchers identified his wife as Susannah Hatcher, but that was her married name, not her maiden name. There was no other Susannah Hatcher. Susannah's third marriage was to John Stewart, as licensed. Depositions given by John Stewart in 1677 and 1681 do not indicate that Susannah is not his wife since they predate his marriage to Susannah.
Frankly, it makes more sense that Susannah (born circa 1640) married John, Sr. (born circa 1632) than John, Jr. (born circa 1658), although a 1686 marriage makes either man a possibility. There are numerous references to "John Stewart, Glover" in the records. One is dated 17 Apr 1693 where Abraham Burton (and his wife Anne) sell to "John Stewart, Glover" the 100 acres of land given to Abraham by his father, Thomas Burton, Sr. In 1699, "John Stewart, Glover" exchanged that same tract of land with Michael Turpin with Susannah (Abraham's mother) giving up her dower rights.
Presuming that (as stated in the bio, above) this is the John Stewart who "owned property at Ashen Swamp in Henrico County, Virginia," that property is very close to the Cobbs plantation and to the original land grant of William Hatcher. Hatcher later acquired property near Ashen Swamp. Hatcher, Burton, and Stewart were all near neighbors on the north side of the Appomattox River near where it flows into the James.

Stewart-6583 and Steward-695 appear to represent the same person because: see text in Steward-695 about "Steward" as LNAB. Based on birth year of Stewart-6583's daughter, I believe it is a duplicate of the father, not the son (also, I think Susannah is bettr suited to be the wife of the father/mother of John Jr., but that would push his [unsourced] 1654 birth to after 1662. I think that works. For now, please merge these profiles. Thanks!
