James Stewart (Stuart) was born on 13 April 1716 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.

It is not known when or why the LNAB was changed from Stewart to Stuart.

James was Lord Provost of Edinburgh twice, from 1764 to 1765 and from 1768 to 1769.

He was Lord Provost of Edinburgh when Benjamin Franklin (1706 - 1790), one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America spent six weeks in Scotland in the spring of 1769. Provost Stuart and the Corporation of Edinburgh bestowed the Freedom of the City upon him and there were great celebrations in the city that were attended by Hume, Robertson and Lord Kaimes. [1]

James was married to Elizabeth Drummond the daughter of Adam Drummond of Binnend on 17 April 1737 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.

Stewart-19444 and Stuart-3998 appear to represent the same person because: The dates of birth are different, but dates and place of death are the same as are the parents and wife.
