George Gilbert Stuart was born on 24 August 1804 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He was the son of Gilbert Stuart (1780–1833) and his wife Margaret Davidson (1780 - d. ?).
Soon after their marriage George and his wife emigrated to the United States where he spent some years in New York City working as a Milllwright.
In 1836 the family relocated to Schoolcraft Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, United States
He passed away on 3 July 1851 in Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, United States and was buried in the Gourdneck Prairie Cemetery, Vicksburg, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, United States.
George Gilbert Stuart was married to Elizabeth Haig on 24-26 March 1827 in Greenlaw, Berwick, Scotland.
