Friends throughout the Nambucca district greatly regret the passing of Mr. Caleb Smith Stuart, who had spent his lifetime of 69 years in this area. On Sunday morning. May 20th, he suffered a heart seizure and was taken by ambulance to Bellingen District Hospital where he passed away at 5.30 a.m. on Tuesday, 22nd May. The late Mr. Stuart was born at Stuart's Island, Nambucca Heads, being the second youngest son of the late John Stuart (after whom the Island was named), who came from Parramatta and created a ship-building organisation at Nambucca Heads, several of his ships, 'The Energy,' 'Fire King,' and several others being well known in old-time coastal trade, but perhaps the most famous of all was the 'Royal Tar,' which won notoriety in Australian history by being chosen by that band of brave people who attempted to create a Utopian community settlement in South America and purchased the 'Royal Tar' to carry them from Sydney on their great experiment which ultimately ended in failure. In his early days, the subject of this notice worked in the timber industry, and in 1903 he married Miss Victoria May Wall (daughter of the late Mr. J. Wall, Macksville), and the couple settled on property at Newee Creek where they carried on farming pursuits until ten years ago when they retired and moved to the new home at Bellwood, opposite Stuart's Island. The late Mr. C. S. Stuart is survived by his wife, three sons and four daughters. The sons and daughters are Ruth (Mrs. Champion, Forbes), Vera (Mrs. C. Peterkin, Valla), Elizabeth (Mrs. J. Rolleston, Newee Creek), Maud (Mrs. M. Sinclair, Newee Creek), Colin (Coff's Harbour), Caleb (Burrapine), and Donald (Coff's Harbour). There are 18 grandchildren. The only surviving brother is Mr. William James Stuart (of Newee Creek).
