Jane Hatton (1844-1921) |
Jane Stubbs was born on 8th February 1844 in Ryde, midway between Sydney and Parramatta, New South Wales (Australia), on the northern bank of the Parramatta River. She was the daughter of William Stubbs and Elizabeth Meads. [1]
Jane married Joseph Hatton, grandson of First Fleeter convicts Joseph Hatton and Ann Wise, Second Fleeter convict George Patfield and 1793 convict arrival Mary O'Brien, on 31st July 1861 in Sydney, New South Wales. [2] Making their home at Glenview, Hatton's Vale, Ryde, they had a son and sixteen daughters, five of whom died in infancy or early childhood:
Aged 77 years and having been widowed for seven years, Jane passed away on 8th September 1921 in Ryde and is buried in the Field of Mars Cemetery, Ryde, in the Anglican Section, Row Sec D Plot 367. [3][4] She was survived by her son and six daughters, daughter and sons-in-law, and grandchildren a plenty.
Jane lived through the final stages of the convict era, goldrushes and bushrangers. She saw the introduction of rail transport and the urbanisation of her beloved Ryde. She probably rode on trams when visiting Town (Sydney). She saw the advent of electricity and radio. She heard of war, with soldiers deploying from New South Wales to the Sudan in 1885, South Africa (Second Boer War) 1899-1902, China (Boxer Rebellion) 1901 and The Great (later known as the First World) War 1914-19. Jane lived through Federation in 1901; the uniting of the six British Colonies into the Commonwealth of Australia. The tallest buildings in Sydney were St James' Church (1824), Sydney Town Hall (1878) and the General Post Office (1891). The 21 hectares (52 acres) Anthony Hordern & Sons Palace Emporium, bounded by George, Liverpool, Pitt and Goulburn Streets, was at one time the largest department store in the world and stood eight stories tall. For most of her life Queen Victoria reigned over the ever-increasing British Empire (1837-1901), succeeded by her son King Edward VII (1901-10) and grandson King George V (1910-25).
