Biography

Sarah was born on October 28, 1820. She was the third child and second daughter of John Stump and Margaret Hose. She passed away in 1908. [1]

Her maiden name was Sarah Stump, and she was the sister of the pastor's father. Her husband was Israel Seitz, who left her a widow 50 years ago on Dec. 31, when he was only about forty years old. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. McCandless on Dec. 5, aged 88 years 1 month and 27 days. She thus became more than twice as old as he was. The struggles of her widowhood to bring up her six children were severe. She brought them to the years of manhood and womanhood and then lived on alone a number of years. Her son Michael became the pastor's father's substitute in the war of the rebellion and his father took care of her the while. Her life was virtuous and chaste.

She was loyal to the faith as she was taught it by her pastor, the sainted Lochman, and her Bible and prayer book were the constant companions of her loneliness. No doubt she often said to herself,"Allein und noch nicht allein."

Her father and her mother had 11 children all of whom grew to manhood and womanhood. But of these only two, Louisa Upp, of Reading and Catherine Morrison in the state of Oregon, survive her. Her six children are still living and all except Susie, who is in Illinois, were present to see the body of their aged mother lowered into the grave in the cemetery which her father gave to the community. The services were held in Pine Grove church. She was a charter member of St. Luke's in the city. In the absence of pastor Bell, her nephew administered the last sad rights over her body. Four of her grand-sons for their grand-mother to her grave. The Lord bring the little flock together again in the better home which never breaks up." I Kings 8:57 – 58, Phil. 3:20 – 21.[2]
