Biography

Michael Johann Stumpf was born in May 1823 in the Black Forest region of the Grand Duchy of Baden, now a part of the German State of Baden-Württemberg. Little is known of his parentage or early life until he departed Germany for the United States in 1852. He sailed from Le Havre, France on 19 August 1852 aboard the George Hurlbut, arriving in New York City on 24 September.[1]

It is possible that he had relatives waiting in the United States because he was already in Belleville, Illinois by 13 February 1853, when he married Magdalena Elisabetha Schwab in a Catholic ceremony.[2] In the years following their marriage, Michael and Magdalena had five children:

For the 1860 U.S. Census, enumerated on 24 July 1860, Michael and family resided in Belleville, Illinois.[3] They have not been identified in the 1870 U.S. Census. For the 1880 U.S. Census, enumerated on 7 June 1880, Michael and family resided on East Street in the 3rd Ward of Belleville, Illinois.[4] On 12 September 1863, Michael was registered for the draft in Illinois Congressional District Twelve, stating his age as 40 as of 1 July 1863.[5] In each record, Michael's occupation is described as a Laborer.

Michael Johann Stumpf died of pneumonia on 14 January 1892 in Belleville, Illinois, having been predeceased by his wife, Magdalena, and their son, Gottlieb. He was buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery in Belleville.[6]
