Biography

Pleasant Mead Sturdivant was born June 14, 1822, in Nelson county, Virginia, son of Reverend Matthew Parham Sturdivant and Agnes (Kent) Sturdivant. On Christmas Day 1845, in Virginia, Pleasant married Nancy Smith Dudley. They became the parents of eleven children: Mary, Bianca, Emma, Isabel, William, Dudley, Martha, Ellen, George, Lillian and Elizabeth. [1]

On the United States Census of 1860, Pleasant and Nancy were living in Pulaski county, Virginia, with five children. [2]

On the United States Census of 1870, Pleasant and Nancy have eight living children. Their eldest, Bianco, who was transcribed as "not named" in 1860, is 21 years of age and still living at home. Their second, Emma, is 19 and the transcriber has typed her (poorly?) written name as Ener. Martha is not listed, but according to her Find A Grave memorial, she lived to adulthood, married and had children. There are three additional children born in the past ten years. [3]

Researcher's Notes

Pleasant's Find A Grave memorial gives the county of his birth as Pulaski, however Pulaski County was formed on March 30, 1839 from parts of Montgomery and Wythe counties, and so did not yet exist at the time of his birth. His parents were living in Nelson county, Virginia when he was born. In addition, the bio states that he was the sixth child of nine, when his parents are known to have at least eleven children.
