Granville Sturgeon was the 8th born of 10 children, with 5 brothers and 4 sisters. He went by the name "Dan" in his later years. He was raised on his parent's farm in the Bristow area of Warren County, Kentucky. Both of this parents were born and raised in Kentucky, and his father owned a rather large estate.
Granville married at age 23 to Malinda Lewis. Malinda was also from a farming family in the Bristow area. She was the 4th born child, with 5 brothers and 5 sisters, and belonged to a very large extended family, all living nearby.
After marriage, Granville and Malinda rented a farm close to his parents in the Rocky Hill area of Edmonson County. They later purchased property in the Greencastle area of Warren County, close to Penns Chapel Church. They always lived close to many family members.
In 1920, Malinda passed away at the age of 53. Three of their children had already married by then, but the rest were still living at home. Their youngest was 7 years old. Granville was listed as a farmer on that year's census, with his 5 sons, ages 16 to 25 listed as his farm laborers.
By 1930, most of the children were married. Many moved off the farm to find laborer jobs in Indianapolis, Indiana. Granville's sons and son-in-laws had a variety of occupations including: packing house, truck driver, plumber, pool room operator, grocery, automotive, machine shop, and paper hanger. Some of the wives even took jobs in laundry rooms. The only two that kept the farming tradition were the twins, Verina and Myrtle. Both girls married farmers and remained in Edmonson County.
Granville's last census shows he is still a farmer at age 67, with one adult son remaining at home. Granville died at age 73 and is buried at Penns Chapel Cemetery with his wife Malinda.
