Biography

Robert Sturgeon, son of Thomas Sturgeon and Margaret Sarah Corbett, was born 29 Jan 1774 in Paxtang, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

About 1798,Robert Sturgeon married Jane Gilbert, probably in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Jane was born about 1780. She passed away about 1866.

Shortly after their marriage, (between 1800 and 1810), the new family migrated from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to Shelby County, Kentucky and eventually settled in neighboring Jefferson County, Kentucky, appearing in the 1810 census there.

The couple had at least 8 children, maybe 9;

1. Thomas Sturgeon b c 1800 probably in Lancaster Co, Pennsylvania. Alive in 1836.
2. Malinda Sturgeon b 14 Feb 1801 in Lancaster Co, PA, married William Wood on 11 Mar 1834 in Jefferson County, KY and she died 24 June 1878
3. Elizabeth Sturgeon b c 1802 in Lancaster County, PA. (Could this Elizabeth be the same child as Margaret C? Elizabeth seems to have died before 1820. Elizabeth is not named in her father's will.) More work needed.
4. Moses Sturgeon b c 1803, executor of his father's will. Alive in 1836.
5. Jane Sturgeon b bet 1804-1808 and married Charles A Arterburn on 16 Nov 1827 in Jefferson County, KY. She died 19 Dec 1872 in Ursa, Adams Co, IL.
6. Harvey Sturgeon b c 1806, alive in 1836.
7. Margaret C b 25 Feb 1809 Shelby Co, KY and married Thaddeus W Bryant. She died 25 Feb 1875 in Shelby Co, KY. (This Margaret C may prove to be the Elizabeth listed above, more work needed)
8. Simpson Gilbert Sturgeon b 11 Jan 1811 in Long Run, Jefferson Co, KY and married in 1839 to Catherine McCune. He died 6 May 1895 in Eastwood, Jefferson Co, KY. Executor of his father's will.
9. Sarah S Sturgeon b 1818-1820 and married 24 Mar 1834 in Jefferson Co, KY to John H Wood. The couple moved to Moultrie County, Illinois and are both buried in Greenhill Cemetery there.

The 1810 census shows us the Robert Sturgeon family is in Jefferson Co, KY. Between 1810 and 1837, they lived in a log house on the road between the old Sturgeon home on Pope Dale Rd and Boston.

In 1820 census, living two doors away from his father's home, Robert Sturgeon is over 45 years old. His wife is over 45 as well. It appears to be husband and wife plus 8 children. 3 persons are engaged in agriculture, none in commerce and one female slave under 14. The children that we have do not line up perfectly with the 1820 census, more work needed.

Robert Sturgeon died before 4 Sep 1837 in Long Run, near Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. He was buried in Long Run Cemetery. He left a will dated 6 Aug 1836 Jefferson County, KY which listed the following children; sons Thomas, Moses, Simpson G, Harvey; daughters Melinda Woods, Jane Arterburn, Margaret Bryant, Sarah Woods. His beloved wife is mentioned but not by name.

Jane Gilbert Sturgeon died 1866 in Jefferson County, KY and was buried in Long Run Cemetery.

Research Notes

McCoy says that he moved to Kentucky about 1810, but Thomas was born in 1803 in Kentucky -- either Shelby or Jefferson County. Milinda was born in 1801 in Paxtang -- so they may have moved between 1801 and 1803. Do not know where the other children were born. Also may not have the correct order of all the childrens' births.

The replaced tomestone at Long Run Cemetery that has his name as Robert I. Sturgeon is in error; he is sometimes referred to as Robert Ist, but he has no known middle name. https://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Robert_Sturgeon_%2810%29

I [the profile creator] have not seen any documentation supporting a son named Robert b 1836. There is no mention in Robert's will dated 1836 of a son, or a child his wife was carrying. Highly doubtful.
