Biography

Rebecca Ann Sturgeon, known as Ann, was born about 1831 in Blackville, New Brunswick, Canada to parents James Sturgeon and Catherine Dennis Walker.[1]

Ann Sturgeon and William Bateman were married by William Henderson in St James Church in New Castle, New Brunswick, Canada on 29 March 1855 in the presence of Robert Sturgeon and George McNeil.[2] Ann's brother, Joseph Sturgeon married his bride, Margaret Vye, on the same date, in the same church, and with the same officiant.

Ann and William had six children, four daughters and two sons.[3]

  1. Catherine Adeline Bateman b. 1855 married John McKenzie
  2. Lydia Caroline Bateman b. 1857-1883 married Richard McKenzie
  3. Edward James Bateman b. 1860-1938 married Willimina 'Minni" Hubbard
  4. John William Bateman b. 1863-1921 married Elizabeth Jane Hubbard
  5. Barbara Isabella 'Bella" Bateman b. 1866-1923 married John J McNeil
  6. Margaret Sarah Bateman b. 1870-1944 married 1) Leonard Jardine, 2) Henry E. Hale

Ann Bateman was widowed in 1874 and was an innkeeper[4] until she moved with her daughter and son-in-law, Bella and John McNeil prior to 1891.[5]

Rebecca Ann Sturgeon Bateman died 4 October 1915 in Boston, Massachusetts and is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, Massachusetts.[6]
