"Samuel Sturges, youngest son of Hezekiah and Abigail (Dimon) Sturges, was baptized in 1766. He married Sarah Sherwood, August 12, 1798. The records of Trinity Church in Southport note the confirmation of Mr. and Mrs. Sturges in 1808, and gives the dates of the births of their children; Sarah Ann, their daughter, a deaf mute, was one of the first pupils educated in the Hartford Asylum. Samuel Sturges, a man of ability and influence, inherited from his father the whole of what is known as Sasqua, or Sascoe Hill, a modern seaside resort, but by a series of misfortunes he lost his patrimony. This preyed upon his mind to such an extent that he became insane. From Sasqua the family had moved to another homestead belonging to the Solomon Sturges estate between the properties of Judson Nichols and D. Dimon Beers on the Mill plain highway. Here Morris Sturges was born. This house was burned by accident, and the family again moved to a house purchased from the Burr family, and now owned by the heirs of Jonathan Sturges, Esq. The graves of Samuel Sturges and his wife Sarah, who died February 12, 1823, are the last of this line whose graves are in Burial Hill Cemetery. Later, the new East Cemetery began to be used."
