Mary was born in 1840. She was the daughter of Seth Sturges and Mary Sturges. She died in Kansas about 1926 and left her husband George W. White a widower.
Mary served as a nurse during the US Civil War being commissioned in 1861 by James E. Yeatman, president of the Western Sanitary Commission and authorized agent of Miss Dorothy L. Dix of the United States Sanitary Commission. Mary and her mother Mary, accompanied the Sixth Illinois Cavalry Regiment to Springfield Illinois, and Paducah, Kentucky. She was apppointed to Adams Block Hospital under the auspices of Mrs. Mary A Livermore of the Northwestern Sanitary Commission based in Chicago.

Mary B Sturges married Patrick Kinney 9 September 1862 at Memphis, Tennessee.[1] They had a child Frank born 7 March 1864 at Peoria, Illinois. Her husband Patrick died 7 January 1864 before Frank was born. Mrs. Mary Kinney married George B. Swan on 6 November 1865. Mrs. Mary Swan, aged 32 yrs, widow, married David Maxfield, age 46, on 25 September 1872 at Sedgwick, Kansas.
The 1875 Kansas State Census shows Mary residing with her third husband David Maxfield, her step-children the Maxfields and her son Frank, a child of her first marriage.

In the 1900 US Census, Mary is residing in the household of her step-son Frank and his family along with her husband David. This census records that Mary has been married for 25 years. With Hubert being born in 1880, Hubert is Mary's second child with husband David. This census also records that she was the mother of 2 children with 1 currently living, which seems to be an error, as Frank Kinney would be a 3rd child and appears in the 1915 Kansas State Census. Mary was awarded a pension of $ 12 per month, private act of Congress no 473 approved 11 July 1890 for her service as an army nurse.

The 1915 Kansas State Census shows Mary residing in the household of Leonard Sturges age 29 (born 1886) who is believed to be the son of her brother George. Also enumerated in the census is her son Frank Kenney and Laura who is probably Frank's wife. The 1920 US Census (not shown), enumerates Mary and Leonard residing together with Leonard as head of household and Mary as his aunt.
