Biography

Notes from his FAG Memorial

"Married Sarah Hanks or Sarah Cole in 1787 She was born ca 1765/69 Va and Died ca 1840 Tenn or Va

"NOTE NOT HANKS BUT COLE David Andrew Sturgill in his paper “Who Was Nancy Hanks Lincoln?” states “In the spring of 1784 Sarah, the oldest daughter of Abraham (Hanks), met and married Lewis Sturgill who lived in present Grayson Co., VA. about ten miles from the home of Joshua Hanks.” The following deeds show that Sarah, wife of Lewis Sturgill/Sturgon/Sturgeone, was Sarah Cole, a daughter of James Cole Sr. of Grayson Co. NC. and not Sarah Hanks as reported by Sturgill.

"On 18 Oct 1803 Samuel Howell Jr. sold to James Cole Sr. 130 acres in Grayson Co. NC on Ruddiks Mill Creek, a branch of Chesnut Creek, a branch of New River.

"On 23 March 1831 James Cole of White Co. Tenn. sold to Joshua Hanks Sr. of Grayson Co. Va. all his interest in 130 ac. in Grayson Co. being “one seventh undivided part of said tract the said James Cole acquired title to as one of the children of James Cole Sr.” Power of attorney by James Cole of White Co. Tn. to Wm. J. Cole to sell land left him by his father James Cole Sr. in Grayson Co. VA.

"On 27 September 1825 John Isom and Rebecca his wife sold to Joshua Hanks one undivided seventh part of 130 ac. in Grayson Co. (there follows a description which matches the one given in the 1803 deed). John Isom married Rebecca Cole 17 Sept 1800 in Carroll/Grayson Co., VA.

"On 2 March 1827 Lewis Sturgon/Sturgeone and Sarah his wife of Hawkins Co. Tn. to Joshua Hanks sell one undivided seventh part of 130 ac. (description matches 1803 above).

"On 5 June 1839 Joshua and Ruth Hanks sold to Thomas and Jincey Hanks 130 acres on Teddick’s Mill Creek that had belonged to Samuel Howel Jr. in 1798 and “which interest being 3/7ths undivided parts”."[1]
