Biography

Hannah was born circa 1827, believed to be in Chautauqua County, New York, the daughter of Israel Sturgis and Sarah "Sally" (Beadle) Sturgis. Around 1831 her family moved to Conneaut Twp. Pa. which is next to the Ohio Line about 20 miles south of Lake Erie, next to present day Pymatuning Lake. Their farm was located about 1ΒΌ miles from what was then known as the Pymatuning Swamp.

Hannah had a younger sibling who was lost and died in the swamp. She also had a sister named Mary Theresa Sturgis born June 1, 1836 in Crawford Pennsylvania. I am not certain about other siblings.

Marriage

Hannah married twice:
1. Hannah married Ethelbert Winch circa 1849 (possibly sooner). In the 1850 census they lived in Richmond Twp. Ohio, Ethelbert's home town. Circa 1851 they moved just north to Pierpont Twp. Ohio, within a couple miles of her old home.

They had 3 children:

  1. Albert Perry - 1851
  2. Sarah Elvira - 1853
  3. Freeland - 1857

Ethelbert Winch died in 1857.

2. About 1 year later Hannah married Ethelbert's friend Lester Turner. They had 3 children:

  1. Flora - 1859
  2. Sylvester - 1861 Twin
  3. Lester - 1861 Twin

Shortly after the birth of their twins, the family moved to Illinois. I am not certain if Lester and his children went also. Most likely they did. Something happened in 1864. Hannah's 3 children by Ethelbert were sent back to Ohio to live with their uncle Philo Winch. Nothing is known of Hannah after this. I am not certain if she was ill, or if she died by 1864.

Death

I believe that Hannah died in Illinois. By 1870 her husband Lester was listed as living in the Ashtabula County Home with his 2 sons. In 1880 he was living in Pierpont Twp, again with the twins.
