Biography

Hannah Sturgis was born on March 3, 1693, to James Sturgis and Rebecca (Thacher) Sturgis of Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Plymouth Colony.[1][2][3] Through her father, James, she was the great-great granddaughter of John Howland and Elizabeth (Tilley) Howland, passengers of the Mayflower.[4][3]

She married John Matthews on March 9, 1708.[5][2][3] The couple had nine known children:

  1. Thomas, (1710-1800)
  2. Isaac, (1712-1790), m. 31 Aug 1743, Sarah (Hedge) Hawes (1709-1761)
  3. Rebecca, (1714-1800), m. 5 Jan 1736, Amos Howes (1706-1777)
  4. John (1717-1800), m. 4 Sep 1737, Mary Atkins
  5. James, (1719-1800)
  6. William, (1721-1789), m. 6 Mar 1746, Abigail Atkins (1734-1811)
  7. Thankful, (1724-1825), m. 16 Jul 1745, Josiah Davis (1718-)
  8. David, (1727-1819), m. 30 Jan 1747, Sarah Hedge (1729-1784)
  9. Elisha, (1730-1825), m. 31 Jan 1751/2, Elizabeth Sturges (1734-)

Hannah passed away on December 18, 1763, in Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Plymouth Colony.[6][7] A grave has not been found for her. She is likely buried with her husband either in Ancient Cemetery or in the Follin Pond area.

Stugis-1 and Sturgis-3 appear to represent the same person because: LNAB was Sturgis, not Stugis. Otherwise, the two profiles represent the same person according to date of birth and name of husband.

Sturgis-153 and Sturgis-415 appear to represent the same person because: According to sources such as Mayflower Births & Deaths and North America, Family Histories, 1500-2000, Hannah Sturgis's husband John spelled his last name with two t's (Matthews, rather than Mathews). This has caused duplicate records to be created for both him and his wife Hannah. Sturgis-153 and Sturgis-415 should be merged into a single record.

Sturgis-226 and Sturgis-153 appear to represent the same person because: This appears to be the same, with limited info
