Biography

Leonard Sturman was born on 7 December 1896 at Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. His date of birth was recorded in the 1939 Register.

Leonard Sturman married Mabel Willetts on 21 March 1921 at St. Paul’s Church, Blackheath, Rowley Regis. Their marriage certificate recorded Leonard was a bachelor aged 22 years and a fruiterer. His father was named as Henry Sturman, a fruiterer. Mabel was a spinster aged 22 years. Her father was named as John Thomas Willetts, a grocer. Leonard’s address at the time of their marriage was 108 Oldbury Rd and Mabel’s was 109 High St, both in Blackheath. Their witnesses were Samuel Joseph Taylor and Edith May Bannister.

This couple had three children.

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War.
