With the passing of Major E. W.. Stutchbury. M.C. and Bar, at his home at Waterloo Road, North Ryde (Sydney), on April 26, at the age of 56, went one of the most popular officers of the 3rd and 55th Battalions during World War I.
SECOND - LIEUTENANT Eric
Stutchbury (as he was then)
was credited with being the young
est officer to hold commissioned
rank in the first A.I.F., spending
his 21st birthday aboard the old
troopship H.M.A.T. Siang-Ghoon
in the Indian Ocean en route to
Egypt during February, 1915.
Eric had charge of the 3rd
reinforcements of the 3rd Bat
talion.
Wounded on Gallipoli in May,
1915, after spending some months
in an English hospital he rejoined
the 3rd Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir
on Christmas Eve, 1915, from
which unit he was promoted First-
Lieutenant, and posted to the
newly-formed 55th Battalion in
February, 1916, and for a time
served as advance embarkation
officer at Marseilles prior to the
departure of the 14th Infantry
Brigade from Egypt to France in
May, 1916.
His captaincy was gained in
the battle of Fromelles on July
19, 1916, followed by the award
of the Military Cross for gallant
leadership during a raid on Clap-
ham Junction Trench on Septem
ber 30 of that year.
The Bar to his M.C. came after
the attack on Doignes in April,
1917, plus the rank of Major, in
recognition of his brilliant work
in the stunt.
An added feather in the cap of
"Little Stutz" was the fact that he
.was Commander of D Company,
55th Battalion, when that Unit was
adjudged the best drilled company
in the whole of the 5th Division
at a Divisional line-up at Henen-
court Wood on July 4, 1917.
Major Stutchbury served with
the 55th until the Armistice, and
also saw service with the armed
forces in Australia in World War II.
Small in stature but large in
heart, this much can be truthfully
stated of Eric Stutchbury: He was
a true Digger, and always lived
and acted up to the best traditions
of all that we expect from a gal
lant officer and gentleman. —
