Samuel Styles was the son of Samuel Styles and Eliza Whitman. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1842 from England. He was among many who signed a petition to the government in June 1844 in regards to the 1842 massacre. In 1847 he was working as a carter in Nelson. Later, Samuel was employed as a policeman and became Senior Sergeant Major of Armed Mounted Police in Wellington. He formed a Maori Police Corps and served in numerous places around New Zealand including Dannevirke between 1850 - 1860. He married Emily (Burton) Brookes, widow, and they settled at Molesworth Street, Thorndon in Wellington. Samuel died age 43 and is buried at Bolton Street Memorial Park, Wellington.
