Johanna Mathilda Styrell was born in Klara parish 20 january 1842 and baptized February 6th. Her parents were the baker Johan Peter Styrell and his wife Lovisa Wilhelmina Påhlson.[1][2]
Her father died in 1854. In 1856 Johanna Mathilda lived on Kungsholmen with her widowed mother, Lovisa Wilhelmina Styrell, and three sisters: Theresia Wilhelmina, Clara Lovisa and Maria Carolina.[3]
Hanna Styrell appeared under the name Mademoiselle Stjernblad at the opening of the Odeon theatre in 1859. The event is vividly described in Aftonbladet 3 October. The theatre was situated on the second floor of Regeringsgatan 28, with a single entrance at the top of the sloping room and a small stage at the bottom. On the première the theatre was packed with an audience, enjoying themselves greatly and noisily - in spite of the shortcomings of the actors - the article is very sarcastic about the quality of acting. Hanna is mentioned as one of two exceptions: Mademoiselle Stjernblad, with her fair deportment, would presumably have no difficulty to find employment at another theatre, should the existence of Odeon and the Selander troupe be brief.[4] The theatre seems to have been closed for restructuring and transfer into other hands around New Year 1860.
According to literary historian Germund Michanek Hanna Styrell probably met king Carl XV 21 October 1859 - the king wrote poetry and there are a couple of poems referring specifically to this date. The unpublished poems by the king leave no doubt that the Hanna Styrell and the king were lovers. Hanna was also a good hostess for the more informal kind of parties.[5]
In 1860 the actress Johanna Mathilda Styrell lived in the quarter Willman, Jakob and Johannes parish - with the theatre manager Joh. Wilh. Selander.[6] Hanna Styrell did not pursue an acting career for long (1860 seems to be the last time she was registered as such). In 1861 she is plain "Mamsell". She lived in the quarter Kvasten, but moved to Hedvig Eleonora parish 27 November 1861.[7][8] Hanna had an apartment in town and spent the summers in Väntorp, a villa on the outskirts of the royal summer home Ulriksdal. The grounds belonged to the crown, but the villa had been gifted to Hanna Styrell.[5]
Although the relationship was well known, it was not spoken about in polite society. On the other hand it was frequently alluded to in the gossip press. Hanna is not often mentioned by name, but the "populist" paper Fäderneslandet, 12 Nov 1862 describes Mamsell Styrell-Stjernblad as a known "Lady of the Camelias".[9]
As reflected in the poetic lamentations of the king, Hanna Styrell seems to have gone abroad some time in the spring 1863, and stayed away for about a year. In her absence from Sweden she may have given birth to a child which was fostered or adopted away.[10] However, there is no later trace of a child born to Hanna at this time. Instead, the parentage of Ellen Maria Svensson, born in Stockholm 28 Oct 1865, is attributed to Hanna Styrell and her royal lover.[11] This is not supported by church records cited on Ellen's profile.
From 1861 Mamsell Johanna Styrell lived in Hedvig Eleonora parish, possibly in the same apartment in the quarter Valfisken (Storgatan 18) where she was in 1865, and which she left in November 1865.[12] Johanna Mathilda Styrell moved in to Jakob parish from Hedvig Eleonora 15 November 1865.[13][14]
In 1868 Mamsell Hanna Styrell lived in the quarter Torsken in Jakob parish.[15] Fröken Johanna Mathilda Styrell moved in from Jakob parish to Norrmalmsgatan 28 in Hedvig Eleonora, accompanied by a maid, 11 November 1868.[16][17] From there she moved out to Solna with the same maid in September 1876.[18] So Hanna Styrell was registered in villa Väntorp the last few months before she married.[19]
First banns were read for Herr Adolf Tersmeden and Mademoiselle Johanna Mathilda Styrell in Solna church 26 November 1876. They were married 11 December by bishop Beronius.[20] Fäderneslandet 29 November 1876 reports - in a "letter to sister Ulla" - the reading of first banns for Adolf Tersmeden and miss Johanna Styrell-Stjernblad in the Solna church Sunday last. The reporter reminds the reader of her previous career at the modest Odeon theatre and points out that her artist's name, Stjernblad, was "ignored" in church. The celebration party at Wäntorp is also reported, including several mentions of the generous gifts from king Carl the fifteenth. This part of the "letter" concludes by mentioning Adolf Tersmeden's resignment as a captain and the plans for a honeymoon in Italy.[21]
Adolf Tersmeden and Johanna Matilda Styrell resided at Ramnäs Manor in Ramnäs parish from September 1877.[22] They lived an active life as owners of Ramnäs bruk and Hanna was appreciated by the workers for her care about families in need.[23]
Johanna Matilda Styrell died in Stockholm from a heart condition 19 April 1904.[24][25]
Her estate inventory mentions a testament between the spouses, stating that whoever survives the other will dispose over the whole estate with full rights of ownership.[26] As beneficiaries of the estate the preface to the inventory lists the widower Adolf Tersmeden and the children of Johanna Mathilda Tersmeden's deceased half sister Theresia Svensson, born Gustafsson: Direktören Birger Adolf Svensson, Direktören Carl Erik Svensson, Matilda Wilhelmina Svensson, married to Grosshandlaren John Hambn, and Miss Anna Theresia Svensson, all in Stockholm, and Ellen Maria Svensson, married to Direktören John Hammar in Djursholm.[27]
