Biography

Matthew, son of Benjamin Sublett and his wife Elizabeth (Jordan),[1] was born about 1781 in Charlotte, Virginia.[2]

Matthew married Frances Keys (born c1787, Virginia).[2]

Matthew died after 1860.[2] [3]

page 68 - 69 Matthew Sublett was born c1781 from the fact that he is first listed as a free white male above 16 years of age in the year 1798 on the tax books of Charlotte County (Virginia) in the household of his father Benjamin Sublett, Sr. This approximate birthdate is corroborated by the fact that in the 1860 census he gave his age as 78. Named for a maternal uncle, Matthew Jordan, he was married (date of bond) 18 Feb. 1803 in Campbell County, Virginia to Frances (Frankey) Key, daughter of Thomas Key, Jacob Key being surety. When his father and brothers moved on to Kentucky, Matthew stayed behind in Virginia. He is listed in the 1810 census of Campbell County, Virginia s between 26-45 years of age, with a wife 16-26, and three sons under 10. In 1814 his father in a Warren County, Kentuckyu, deed refers to son Matthew as "of Charlotte County, Virginia," and gives him thereby a negro "now at John Fores of Campbell County, Virginia. Matthew is listed in Campbell County, Virginia in the 1840 census, age 50-60. By 1850 he had moved to Giles County, Virginia, where he is listed, aged 70, with wife Frances, 65. In the 1860 census of Giles County, Matthew 78, and Frances, 73, were residing with their youngest son Allen W. Sublett. He apparently died in Giles County during the succeeding decade, though he left no will.
