Biography

Priscilla Sugg, born in Norfolk, Colonial America, Virginia, about 1706 to George Sugg and Sarah Ives. Priscilla married Thomas Caton. Priscilla married William Maund and had 5 children. Priscilla married Jacob Allen and had 4 children. Priscilla married James Johnston. She passed away on 1784 in Edgecombe.[1]

Priscilla Sugg, daughter of George Sugg is a confusing study. In her father's will, written in September of 1734, she was called Priscilla Maund, yet on the 30th of March 1735, a land record shows her leasing the 10 acres and water mill willed to her by her father George Sugg and she signs herself Priscilla Caton. There are two (2) leases both bearing the same date, each says she was daughter of George Sugg and in one he is called, "Older George Sugg," thereby indicating there was a younger man of the same name.[2]

October 23, 1734, Thomas sells back to his brother-in-law and sister, Jacob and Priscilla Allen, (Deed Book 19, p. 23) the Mill and 10 acres left to Priscilla by her father. She was listed in her father's Will as Priscilla Maund. However, the next year on March 30, 1735, she leased the Mill and land to Thomas and gave her name as Priscilla Caton. This Anson County, North Carolina, document dated October 23, 1759 (Deed Book 19, p. 23) explains William Maund, the grandson of William Maund, Senior reference to "I given to Mother Prissila Allin" in his Will dated February 7, 1761 (Will Book 7, p. 27) in Edgecombe County, North Carolina.[3]

CHAPTER 23

Priscilla (1706 Norfolk, VA-after Feb 1777 Edgecomb Co., NC) - She first married William Maund, brother of Elizabeth, first wife of Priscilla's brother Aquilla. They had two children: William and Esther. She second married Thomas Catton. They had a daughter, Mary. She third married Jacob Allen (?-1762 Pitt Co., NC) abt 1743. They had 3 children: Merryman, Charles, and Gabriel C. She fourth married James Johnston before Jan 1775.
Therefore, sometime after 2 September 1734 when George Sugg wrote his will naming "daughter, Priscilla Maund," Priscilla married a second time yet before 12 March 1735 when she signs as Priscilla Caton, wife of Thomas Caton. On 12 March 1735 Priscilla and Thomas Caton sold to Thomas Sugg for twenty shillings one tract of land containing about 10 acres with a water mill that Priscilla inherited by her father's will in 1734 (Deed Book 12, p. 45).
Several years later on 23 October 1759, Priscilla is now Priscilla Allen and got the water mill and 10 acres back from Thomas Sugg. Priscilla and her now husband, Jacob Allen were now of Beaufort County, North Carolina, and Thomas Sugg was of Anson County, North Carolina. The siblings lived in North Carolina, but the record is found in Norfolk County, Virginia (Deed Book 19, p. 23).[4]
