Biography

Chiune was born January 1, 1900 in Yaotsu, Gifu Prefecture, Chūbu region, Honshū, Japan. His parents were Yoshimi Sugihara (杉原好水) and Yatsu (Unknown) Sugihara (杉原やつ). Chiune had four brothers and one sister.[1]

Chiune married Klaudia Semionovna Apollonova in Harbin, Manchuria, but they divorced in 1935. Chiune returned to Japan, where he married Yukiko Kikuchi, who was born in 1913 and died in 2008. Chiune and Yukiko had four sons, Hiroki, Chiaki, Haruki, Nobuki. As of 2010, Nobuki is their only surviving son.[1]

Chiune died July 31, 1986 at a hospital in Kamakura, Japan.[1]
