Margaret, also known as Mary, was born to Dennis Sugrue and Johannah Hanlon.

Dennis and Johanna had left their home in County Kerry, Ireland with Dennis' son from a previous marriage and Timothy aged 2, bound for New Zealand on the ship 'Waimate'.

Timothy died during the voyage.

Margaret was born on the Waimate before they reached land.

Her family settled at Geraldine in Canterbury and eventually Margaret moved to the West Coast.

She was employed as a house maid at Corby's Hotel, St Helens near Seddonville.

In the early hours of June 9, 1908, the hotel and the adjoining cottage were destroyed by fire. Margaret was admitted to Westport Hospital with serious burns and died a month later on the evening of July 10.

She was 32. Margaret is buried under the name Margaret Sughune at Orowaita Old Cemetery, plot 13 in the Roman Catholic Section.
