Biography

John Halford Suiter was born on 15 Aug 1822, in West Port, Ohio, USA. His parents' family was in Sangamon, Illinois, in the 1830 Census. His mother died in 1833, and his father remarried later that year. The family moved to Le Claire, Iowa, in 1834, when John was about 12 years old. Including those who did not live to adulthood, he had a total of 5 siblings and 7 half-siblings (with 2 step-mothers).

"John Suiter moved to Iowa when the State was in the beginning of its development, while he was yet a young and single man, and he became engaged as a pilot for boats over the rapids between Le Claire, Davenport and Rock Island." Source: #S-2061375682 p. 522

He married Eliza Wright on 22 Dec 1842, in Le Claire, Scott County, Iowa, USA. ^{[1] [2]}

They had 8 children (3 girls and 5 boys), of whom 1 girl and 5 boys lived to adulthood. His sons stayed mainly in the Le Claire area, at least two of them becoming rapids pilots, like himself. His daughter Agnes married first homesteader Daniel Freeman and moved to a homestead near Beatrice, Nebraska. Their farm is now the Homestead National Historical Park.

He was a rapids pilot on the Mississippi River, between around 1843 and 1875, in Le Claire. He was listed as a farmer in the 1850 and 1880 Census, and as a pilot in the 1860 Census.

He died on 6 Jun 1896, in Le Claire, Scott County, Iowa, USA. He was buried in Le Claire, Scott County, Iowa, USA.
