Alfred was the son of William Suits and Catherine Kerr. He married the 13th of February in 1848 to Elizabeth Barker. The couple wed in Bellview, Boone County, Kentucky.
Alfred's occupation was a "druggist" and he resided with his family in the town of Dillsborough, Indiana. He enlisted during the Civil War and served in Company B of the 83rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He mustered in 8/11/1862. He was mustered out on 6/2/1865 at Washington, DC., having served the entirety of the Civil War, chronically ill through much of this service.
Alfred had contracted a bacterial disease while serving, which left him suffering from remittent fevers, rheumatism, chronic diarrhea, and heart palpitations. Upon returning home he was elected a magistrate and appointed postmaster to keep his family, but was disabled to the point of not being able to accomplish a full days work. He died within a few years from this disease leaving his widow, Elizabeth (Barker), and sons Hiram and William H. Suits.
Note: Alfred's death place is listed on his Findagrave memorial as Aurora. He died in Dillsboro per a letter from his attending physician contained in his widow's pension file.
