Biography

Daniel Sullivan was an Illinoisan.

Daniel Joseph Sullivan was born on February 19th, 1897 in Joliet, Illinois. [1] [2] His parents, Timothy D. and Nellie Sullivan, were both Irish immigrants who arrived in the United States around 1890. In 1900 the Sullivans lived in Joliet, where Dan's father worked as a wire drawer. [3] They moved to Pueblo, Colorado between 1904 and 1905, and his father went to work in the Colorado Fuel & Iron Company's steel mill. They rented a place at 2223 Pine Street for about four years, moving to 1334 Pine Street around 1909. [4] The 1910 Census listed their address as 1334 Spruce Street, and they lived at 1339 Spruce Street in 1911 and 1912. [5] The following year they moved to 2712 East Routt Avenue, where they rented their residence through 1919. [6]

Dan joined his father in the steel mill when he was 15 years old, working while attending two years of high school. He worked as a laborer and door boy until becoming an oiler in 1916. [7] [8]

Following his 21st birthday, Dan registered with the local draft board on June 5th, 1917. [1] He was conscripted in August with 32 other Pueblo boys who departed from the Union Depot on August 7th for training camp. [9] Dan mustered in as a private (and later promoted to corporal) in Company B of the 62nd Regiment of the 8th Infantry Division. [2] He was discharged on April 9th, 1919 but remained in the military until May 8th, 1920. [10] [11] He was enumerated as a private in the military in Camp Lee, Virginia for the 1920 Census. [12]

Later that year he returned to Pueblo and to his work in the steel mill. He married Frances (Croshal) Wichich on February 21st, 1921, and they initially lived at 1401 Cypress Street. The mill went through a series of production halts during that time, and Dan found temporary work for Bodecker & Sullivan. In August 1921 he retired from the steel mill and took a job as a mail carrier with the post office. [7] [13] [14]

By 1923 the Sullivans moved to 511 East Northern Avenue next to Frances' parents and siblings. [15] They moved to 947 Spruce Street by 1925 and lived there until moving back in with her Frances' father after her mother died in 1930. [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] The Sullivans remained in the Croshal household until moving back to 947 Spruce in 1937 or 1938. [21] [22] [23] [24] [25] [26] [27] In 1940 the house on Spruce was valued at $1,000, equivalent to Dan's annual income at the post office. [8] The Sullivans remained in Pueblo until 1945, when they migrated to San Mateo, California. [28] [29] [30]

Dan worked for a few years as a Burlingame office employee before becoming a shipping clerk for a local swimming pool company. [30]

He fell ill in May 1960 and was eventually admitted to the Veteran's hospital in Oakland where he died on July 22nd, 1960. [30] [31] He was buried on July 26th in Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno. [2] [11]
