Biography

Myrtle was born on 12 March 1921 in Kendall, Monroe, Wisconsin, USA. She was the daughter of James Sullivan and Marie Elisa (Langsdorf) Sullivan.[1]

In the 1930 census Myrtle (age 9) was living in Sheldon, Monroe, Wisconsin, USA. Marital Status: Single; Relation to Head: Daughter.[2]

When Myrtle was 18 she married Harold John Thomas on 25 April 1939 (or 1938) in St Mary's Ridge, Monroe, Wisconsin, USA.[3][4]

Myrtle died at the age of 86 on 2 September 2007 in La Crosse, La Crosse Co., Wisconsin.[5][6]

Myrtle Thomas

Myrtle (Sullivan) Thomas, age 86, of West Salem and formerly of Tomah, died Sunday Sept. 2, 2007, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, WI. She was born March 12, 1921, in a small farm house near Kendall, WI, to James and Marie (Langsdorf) Sullivan. She attended grade school here until 3rd grade when her family moved to Ontario. Here, she finished school to 8th grade in the Cook Creek schoolhouse and then attended high school in Ontario, She worked at the hotel in Ontario for her room and board until she graduated in 1937. On April 25, 1938, she was united in marriage to Harold Thomas. They were married until his death in 1985.

Myrtle was an member of the Tarr Valley Homemakers Club and the St. Mary’s P.C.C.W. She also worked as treasurer of the Direct Market Sales Barn for several years. When she and Harold were farming she raised chickens and sold eggs, along with tending to a large garden. As her husband’s health failed, she devoted her time to his care for over 15 years.

She is survived by two children; three grandchildren; six brothers and sisters: Marie (Harry) Brueggen, Margaret Laufenberg, Jane Giese, Tom (Pat) Sullivan, Sister Gertrude Marie Sullivan, Caroline Bertolini, and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her parents; one daughter, Theresa Winkler; two infant children; one granddaughter, Tammy Thomas, and seven brothers and sisters: Helen Schmitz, Louise Pearse, Lucille Schermerhorn, Dan Sullivan, Jerry Sullivan, Dorothy Pipp and Roger Sullivan.

Funeral services were held Wednesday Sept. 5, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tomah. The Very Rev. Steven Kachel officiated. Burial followed in the Town of Greenfield Cemetery in Tunnel City.
