Biography

Sophia Sullivan was born on March 02, 1887 in the village of Cairo in Euphemia township, Lambton County, Ontario, Canada[1], the daughter of William Sullivan and Jane McCready.

Sophia married Paul F.A. Schendel on July 9, 1909 in Brigden, Moore township, Lambton county, Ontario, Canada. The marriage was by license and performed by the Rev. Walter I. McLean of Waubuno. Paul was a bachelor of 25 years and Sophia a spinster of 22 years. Witnesses were Charles Zochin of Wyandotte, MI and Meda McAllister of Euphemia. A Reception was held at the home of the bride[2]. After their marriage, the Schendels moved to Detroit where Paul was employed as a street car conductor, remaining there until 1910[3]. By 1911 the Schendels had moved to the Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, Canada where Paul was farming on Township 6, Range 3[4].

The Schendels then moved to Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada and were living at 155 Cameron St in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canadawhere they lived with their young daughter, Eleanor and Sophia’s sister Annie Sullivan[5]

In 1934 the Schendels moved to Waterloo, Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada when Sophia’s husband Paul became the Canadian manager of the Aid Association for Lutherans (Later Faith Life Financial). Sophia was active in the Waterloo branches of the Victorian Order of Nurses, the YWCA and was a director of the Waterloo Branch of the Canadian Red Cross Society[6].

Sophia died quietly at the home of her son Allan on March 5, 1972 after enjoying Sunday dinner with her husband and son’s family. She stated that she was tired and went to lie down for a while and was found dead shortly later.[7].
