Biography

This profile is part of the Sulzbach Name Study.

Joseph was a son of Jacob Sultzbach and Mary Anna "Nancy" (Forrey) Sultzbach. He was born in Pennsylvania, probably in York County, on 7 March 1825.

He was married to Hannah Landis.

The 1850 U.S. Census recorded Joseph Sulsbauch, age 25, in Upper Paxton Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, with Hannah Sulsbauch, age 21, and John Boam, age 9. Joseph reported $2975 in real estate.[1]

Their children were:[2]

  1. Uriah, born 21 June 1850, died 15 May 1911.[3]
  2. Jeremiah (Jerry), born 12 October 1851, died 13 December 1924
  3. Joseph
  4. Jacob
  5. Jane; married a man named Webb.[4]
  6. Kate; married Isaac Bonawitz.

The 1860 U.S. Census recorded Joseph Sultzbaugh, age 35 and a farm hand, and Hannah Sultzbaugh, age 31, and their children living in Upper Paxton Township (Millersburg post office) in a household headed by farmer Jacob Sultzbaugh, age 61 (his father). Others in the household were his sister Amanda, age 20, described as a domestic, and his brother Jeremiah, age 17 and a farmhand. Listed children of Joseph and Hannah Sultzbaugh were Uriah, age 10; Jeremiah, age 8; Joseph, age 6; and Mary J., age 4. Joseph had $3500 in real estate and $1400 personal estate.[5]

In 1870, the U.S. Census recorded Joseph Sultzbach, age 45 and a farmer, as head of his household in Upper Paxton Township. He had $10,000 in real estate and additional personal estate. Others in his household were Hannah, age 42; Jeremiah, 17; Joseph, 15; Mary J., 13; Catharine A., 11; and Jacob, 5. Residents of the adjacent household were Uriah Sultzbach, 20 and a laborer, and Barbara Sultzbach, 19.[6]

Joseph died in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, at the age of 48 on 11 August 1873 and is buried in Saint David's Reformed Church Cemetery, Killinger (Dauphin County), Pennsylvania.[7]

  2. Sultzbach, Joseph (index card), Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, except as noted.
  3. The Mennonite index card gives the birth date as June 21, 1841. This is inconsistent with other records for Uriah, and if Uriah was born in 1841, he could not be the child of a woman born in 1828 and is unlikely to be the child of a man born in 1825. His memorial stone shows a birth date of June 21, 1850.
  4. This appears to correspond to daughter Mary Jane; her husband's name was Webner.

Sultzbach-85 and Sultzbach-23 appear to represent the same person because: Unquestionably the same. When we discover that a person already exists in WikiTree, we should connect our family member to the existing profile (for example, as father). Now these need to be merged.
