Amanda was born 19 March 1840 in Hellam Township, York County, Pennsylvania. She was a daughter of Joseph and Catharine Sulzbach (a.k.a. Sultzbaugh).[1] She was baptized on 24 May 1840 in the Reformed Congregation at Creutz Creek, York, Pennsylvania. [1]
Her parents, Joseph Sultzbach and Catharine Longnecker,[2] had married before about 1834. At the 1850 U.S. Census both Joseph and Catharine Sultzbaugh were recorded as 38 years old and living in Hellam, York County with eleven children, including 10-year-old Amanda Sultzbaugh.[3]
In 1854 the family moved from Pennsylvania (where census records indicate that her brother George was born in about 1853) to Ohio (where census records indicate that her brother Howard was born in about 1855). They settled on the Urbana Pike in Moorefield Township, Clark County, Ohio, in about 1856. [4]
The 1860 U.S. Census recorded Amanda in her parents's household in Moorefield Township. Joseph and Catharine and fourteen children were living in Moorefield, Clark County, Ohio, with a post office address of Springfield, Ohio. Joseph was a farmer.[5]
Amanda Sultzbach married Samuel Markwood in Clark County, Ohio, on 6 April 1876.[6]
The 1880 U.S. census recorded Samuel Markwood and wife Amanda Markwood in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio. Samuel was reported as 33 years old, born in Ohio to parents born in Ohio, with occupation of blacksmith. Amanda was reported as 28 years old, born in Pennsylvania to parents born in Pennsylvania.[7] Perhaps Amanda deliberately understated her age, or perhaps the census enumerator talked to someone who guessed at her age.
By 1900, Amanda was in Seattle, Washington, where that year's city directory recorded Mrs. Amanda Markwood residing at 851 5th Ave. N.[8] Later records identify Samuel Markwood as a prospector or miner; it is possible that Amanda was living in Seattle while her husband was away seeking gold in the Klondike. In the 1902 Seattle city directory, Mrs. Amanda Markwood was residing at 1003 East Pike.[9] By 1903 Samuel and Amanda appear to have settled at 1529 13th Ave. in Seattle, where they were to live for at least the next dozen years. The 1903 directory did not include Amanda's name, but it listed Samuel Markwood, a miner, living at 1529 13th Ave.[10] Samuel's name appears together with Amanda's in the 1904 Seattle city directory; that directory listed Samuel Markwood and Mrs. Manda Markwood living at 1529 13th Ave. Samuel was a prospector. [11] The 1906 Seattle directory listed Samuel Markwood, but not also Amanda, at 1529 13th Ave.; Samuel worked as a "helper."[12] In 1907, Sam'l Markwood of 1529 13th Ave. was listed as a miner; there is no mention of Amanda. [13] At the 1910 census, "Same" Markwood and Amanda Markwood were at 1529 13th Ave. and Samuel was once again a blacksmith. He was said to be age 67 and Amanda was said to be 55. Both were recorded as born in Ohio to parents born in Pennsylvania. They reported having been married 39 years, and Amanda had not had any children.[14] In the 1912 city directory, Samuel and Amanda were living at 1529 13th Ave., and Samuel was a blacksmith.[15] In 1914 and 1915, Saml and Amanda Markwood were at the same address. In 1914, Saml had no occupation listed,[16] but the directory for 1915 shows him working as a blacksmith.[17] Samuel Markwood is not listed in the 1916 directory, in which Mrs. Amanda Markwood is listed at 206 23rd Ave N. [18] According to a FindaGrave Memorial, Samuel Markwood (husband to Amanda) died in 1916.[19] A Washington state death certificate for Samuel Markwood, as transcribed by FamilySearch, shows him dying in Seattle on 25 July 1916, age 46. It names his father as Harry Markwood.[20] That age at death is impossibly young for this Samuel Markwood, but the death date is consistent with other records for him; could this be a transcription error?
By 1918, Amanda had moved into a care home. In the 1918 directory, Mrs. Amanda Markwood is listed as a resident of the Kenney Home.[21] The 1920 U.S. Census recorded 76-year-old Manda Markwood, a widow, born in Pennsylvania to parents born in Pennsylvania, as one of the boarders living in Kenny Presbyterian Home in Seattle, Washington. [22]
Amanda Markwood died in Seattle, Washington, on 28 April 1926, recorded as 82 years old. The transcript of her death record names her parents as James Sulizback and Catherine Longnecker and names her spouse as Samuel Markwood.[23]
