Cynthia was born in about 1813 to Owen Sumner and Sarah "Sally" (Newton) Sumner. She first married Jacob H. Lester in about 1834. After his death (in about 1842) she was remarried in about 1843 to John W. Cox. She is listed with John, their daughter Susan, and her daughter from her first marriage; Emaline Lester on the 1850 Census in Jacksonville, Floyd, Virginia.[1] On: the 1860 Census (she is only listed with her daughter; Susan)[2], the 1870 Census[3] and the 1880 Census[4] she is listed as widowed in the same area of Floyd, Virginia. A record of death has not yet been located but she passed away sometime after the 1880 Census and before the 1900 Census.
