John and Hannah Clarke were newly weds when they emigrated to South Africa aboard the 'Haidee', and were awarded an allotment at the settlement 'York', which they eventually sold, and John then became the farm manager at Groenkop. They had a large family, and one of the sons, Mathew married one Emily Kitchen/Kitching.

The marriage between Mathew Clarke and Emily Kitchen/Kitching produced four children, and at her early death on April 20th 1900, the children were Lucy Jane aged 7 yrs, William 4 yrs, Marriot 2 yrs and Winnifred aged 5 months. Mathew was unable to care for the children, so it is presumed that the two older children were put into foster care. At this time, nothing is known about the younger children or the further whereabouts of Mathew Clarke. Regards, Graham Smith
