When Alvin Jacob Summitt was born on April 1, 1858, in Greenville, Indiana, his father, Solomon Saul Summitt, was 28 and his mother, Elizabeth Dryden Clayton, was 40. He married Mary Mayme Cochran and they had five children together. He died on December 20, 1945, in East St. Louis, Illinois, at the age of 87, and was buried in Flora, Illinois.
