Biography

BATH, ME., Sep 15 - Mrs. Mary Sumner Sewall, 82, mother of Maine's former Gov, Sumner Sewall, and widow of William D. Sewall, Maine shipbuilder, who constructed the last square-rigged sailing ship in this country, died tonight at York Hall, the family home.

Mrs. Sewall, the last of her generation of Sumners, was born in Worcester. Her brother, Edward, retired Worcester department store president, died in 1943. She was an aunt of Mrs. Walter Edge, wife of the Governor of New Jersey.

She leaves another son, Arthur Sewall, four times mayor of Bath; two daughters, Mrs. Fred M. Hector of Fargo, N.D., and Mrs. John K. Jayne of New Canaan, Ct.; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
